“Wow, buddy, that’s very pretty,” I said, after you put the finishing glitter on your pink-and-purple digger.
“No, mom, he’s handsome,” you corrected me. “He’s a boy digger. Girls are pretty, boys are handsome.”
“Well, boys can be pretty, but okay,” I replied. Adjectives notwithstanding, I was pretty proud that you felt a ‘boy’ machine could be pink and purple and glittery.
“Girls are princesses,” you elaborated, “and boys are just…people.”
Okay, maybe there’s still some work there to be done.
